Dementia Friendly Hoffman Estates Initiative

Phase 1: Building the Foundation

Staff Training and Dementia Awareness (Completed 2024)

In spring and summer 2024, Village staff and the Village Board began their journey toward becoming a dementia-friendly community. Through specialized training, participants gained a deeper understanding of dementia and the unique needs of residents affected by it. This foundational phase equipped the Village workforce with essential knowledge and practical strategies to offer compassionate, informed support.

Establishing a Community Committee (Fall 2024) A Dementia Friendly Hoffman Estates Community Committee was formed to assess current services, programs, and support systems, and to identify opportunities for improvement. This diverse committee includes representatives from Ascension St. Alexius Hospital, the Hoffman Estates Park District, Schaumburg Township District Library (Hoffman Estates branch), the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce, local faith organizations, and other community partners. Meeting regularly, the committee sets priorities and develops a comprehensive framework to enhance dementia-friendly resources across Hoffman Estates.

Implementing Initiatives (Spring 2025) Beginning in spring 2025, the committee will launch targeted initiatives designed to expand dementia-friendly programs and resources. These efforts aim to create meaningful opportunities for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers to engage with the community in supportive, enriching ways.

Phase 2: Community and Business Engagement

With initial programs underway, the Dementia Friendly Community Committee continues to meet to evaluate progress and develop programming for those impacted by dementia and their caregivers.

A key focus of this phase is engaging local businesses. Participating establishments will undergo dementia-friendly training to better serve customers living with dementia and their caregivers. Upon completion, these businesses will be formally recognized as Dementia Friendly Establishments, signaling their commitment to inclusivity, awareness, and compassionate service. This designation helps foster a more supportive environment throughout Hoffman Estates and encourages broader community participation.

This work aligns with the mission of Dementia Friendly America, which empowers communities to take action through sector-specific resources and collaboration. The Village of Hoffman Estates proudly supports the following goals:

  • Raising awareness and transforming public attitudes about dementia
  • Offering supportive services that enhance quality of life
  • Providing resources for caregivers and families
  • Encouraging inclusive participation in community life
  • Reaching underserved populations affected by dementia
