Yard Waste Programs
Residents are able to put out unlimited yard waste on their regular collection day from April through November of each year. This service is included in the regular service refuse fee; yard waste stickers are not required.
Acceptable yard waste can be prepared as follows:
- Paper landscape bags (not to exceed 50 lbs)
- Brush bundles (not to exceed 50lbs, 5’ in length, 24” in diameter and no limbs greater than 5” in diameter)
- Resident-supplied rigid plastic containers (not to exceed 50 lbs or 32 gallons)
- Yard waste specific Groot toter cart (rental fee $30/yr, billed $2.50/month)
In addition to yard waste, residents using their own rigid plastic container or a Groot yard waste cart may include organic food scraps along with yard waste for composting. Organic compost waste will not be accepted in paper landscape bags.
Yard waste stickers may be returned to Village Hall during normal business hours through June 30 and will be bought back at face value based on the year they were originally purchased.
Collection Period
By contract, yard waste collection occurs from the beginning of April through the end of November, only.
A special two-week collection period for holiday trees and greenery takes place for the first two pickups in January.Accepted Materials
Acceptable yard waste: Illinois state law prohibits the land-filling of yard waste, as follows:
- Grass clippings and leaves
- Branches and brush
- Planting materials: garden plants, flowers, weeds, vines, bark pieces, pine cones, etc.
Unacceptable materials (treat as garbage):
- Garden vegetables and fruit (may be compostable)
- Tree trunks, stumps, and large limbs
- Fence posts, railroad ties, firewood, and other wood objects
- Sod, earth, and rocks

Composting Program
In addition to yard waste, residents using their own rigid plastic container or a Groot yard waste cart may include organic food scraps along with yard waste for composting. Organic compost waste will not be accepted in paper landscape bags.
Acceptable food scraps include:
- Fruits & Vegetables
- Bread, Grains
- Pasta, Cereal
- Dairy (no liquids)
- Coffee Grounds & Tea Leaves
The following items are not accepted for composting:
- Paper Products (paper towels, plates, napkins, egg cartons, pizza boxes)
- Glass, Plastics & Styrofoam
- Diapers, Pet Litter & Waste
- Teabags & Coffee Filters
- Liquids, Grease & Oil
- Meat, Poultry or Seafood (no shells or bones)
Bags and bundles
The only bags that are acceptable for yard waste disposal are 30-gallon biodegradable Kraft paper bags designed for yard waste. No plastic bags are acceptable. Branches that do not fit into bags must be bundled.
Free Seasonal Branch Pickup and Drop Off Programs
Hoffman Estates offers a free curbside tree branch pickup program in spring and fall.
This program is for residents covered by the Village refuse collection contract. Routes and dates have been established for various sections of the community.
Typically, the spring program runs from the end of April through May and the fall program runs from the end of September through October. Dates vary each year. The schedule for each zone (A-D) is published seasonally in the Village's newsletter.
