Red Light Camera Program

The Village of Hoffman Estates has 9 Red Light Cameras at the 5 intersections listed below:

  • Higgins Road and Barrington Road – (Eastbound, Westbound, Southbound)
  • Roselle Road and Higgins Road – (Northbound)
  • Golf Road and Sutton Road – (Southbound, Eastbound)
  • Golf Road and Barrington Road – (Westbound)
  • Golf Road and Bartlett Road – (Eastbound, Westbound)

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), in 2022, 1,149 people were killed and more than 107,000 people were injured in crashes that involved red light running. A study done by IIHS found that red light cameras reduce the fatal red light running rate by 21%.

The Village implemented a red-light camera safety program and would like to remind drivers how to safely approach and travel through an intersection. Drivers should always prepare to slow down and make a complete stop when the signal turns yellow. Yellow lights indicate a warning for the upcoming change in traffic flow. Always yield to pedestrians, as they have the right-of-way, and always come to a full and complete stop before turning right on red. It's the law.
A red-light violation occurs when a motorist enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. Motorists who are already in the intersection when the signal changes to red are not considered red light violators. For example, a driver who enters an intersection on a green light will not receive a citation, even if that motorist must wait until the light turns red to complete a left-hand turn after oncoming traffic clears. Further, the Village's red-light cameras will not capture images of vehicles making right turns where right turns are not prohibited.

The red-light camera activates upon detecting motion, signifying that a vehicle is entering the intersection AFTER the traffic signal has turned red. It captures two images of the violation: one showing the vehicle before it approaches the intersection on red, and the other as it continues through the intersection. Video footage is also recorded to provide additional evidence of the infraction. Each incident is carefully reviewed, and a Hoffman Estates Police officer confirms the violation before a notice is issued.

Owners of vehicles that are photographed running red lights will receive a notice in the mail and are subject to a minimum fine of $100. Those who receive a violation can obtain additional information or view their photographs and video online at www.violationinfo.com. Citizens also can call toll free 866-790-4111 if they have questions.

Due to maintenance activities or construction, there are periods of time when the redlight camera system may be out of service.
