Firefighter Employment

Pursuant to Illinois statute, candidates are hired off of an established eligibility list. The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is not currently conducting a process to add candidates to the list.  When a testing process is announced, the information will appear on this page.

The following are the current requirements to test for entry-level firefighter positions:

• Between 21 and 34 years of age (20-year-olds may apply but cannot be hired off the list until reaching the age of 21)
• United States citizenship
• A valid Driver’s License with eligibility to operate a vehicle in Illinois
• A High School Diploma (or its equivalent)
• Vision minimum corrected to 20-20 with no color blindness
• Minimum non-corrected hearing ability to perform as a firefighter
• The ability to speak, read, write, and understand the English language
• National Registry or IDPH licensure as an EMT
