April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

The Hoffman Estates Police Department will participate in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) distracted driving campaign throughout the month of April.

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts a driver’s attention from the primary task of driving, with examples including texting, eating, talking on the phone – all of which increase crash risks by reducing focus and increasing response time. According to the NHTSA, 3,142 lives were lost in the United States in 2020 due to distracted driving.

Remember, Illinois law prohibits using handheld cell phones, texting, or using other electronic communication devices while driving, classifying them as moving violations. Drivers over 19 may use hands-free devices (Bluetooth/speakerphone) or single-button voice-activated technology. Violations include a $75 fine for the first offense with penalties increasing for subsequent offenses.
