Crime prevention through Neighborhood Watch

Crime can happen anywhere - even here

Did you know it only takes a burglar 8 to 12 minutes to get in and out of your home? Or that a brief conversation could be all it takes for a scammer to steal your life savings. In just seconds, someone can smash your car window and grab your purse or backpack.

It doesn’t matter where you live or how street-smart you are — crime can happen to anyone. Criminals count on your lack of awareness and your false sense of security to commit crimes.

The Crime Triangle: Desire. Ability. Opportunity.

For a crime to occur, three elements must be present:

  1. Desire – the motivation to commit the crime
  2. Ability – the means or tools to carry it out
  3. Opportunity – the chance to act without being caught

If we can remove just one of these elements, the crime cannot happen.

Be Part of the Solution

Law enforcement can’t be everywhere at once. That’s why we need the community — your eyes, your ears, and your voice. Work with police, neighbors, friends, and family to:

  • Stay informed
  • Report suspicious activity
  • Share information to help others stay alert

Start a Neighborhood Watch Group

One of the best ways to stay connected and prevent crime is by forming a Neighborhood Watch group. All you need is a few neighbors who care and are willing to get involved. Start a Watch Group in 5 Easy Steps:

  • Recruit and organize as many neighbors as possible.
  • Contact Officer Corey Chereck to schedule a meeting. Call 847-781-2800 or email Corey.Chereck@vohe.org.
  • Discuss concerns in your area and develop an action plan.
  • Create a communication plan to stay connected.
  • Act — host meetings, block parties and community events.

Together, we can reduce crime and build a safer, stronger Hoffman Estates.
