Air and Water Quality

Air Quality Improvement

Thanks to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), the Village was able to start an energy assessment program for our residents! Not only does the analysis of your home energy systems make your home more efficient, but they also check for things that could be harming your air quality, such as leaks of natural gas, Carbon Monoxide (CO), and a home sealed "too well" for proper air circulation.  To learn more about this opportunity, click HERE for a brochure or call 847.781.2631.

The Village works with two organizations to promote the improvement of air quality in our community.  Clean Air Counts is a regional initiative, and Partners for Clean Air provides tips on preventing air pollution and tracks air Pollution Days. Both offer wonderful tips for creating a safe environment for you and your family.

The Village has initiated an idling-reduction program for Village fleet vehicles. Not only does this save thousands of gallons of fuel, but it also reduces the emissions released into the air while non-emergency vehicles must stop within Village neighborhoods. The Village also recently purchased another hybrid vehicle for the Public Works fleet. The EECBG program paid for the hybrid portion, and the other cost of replacing an old fleet vehicle was budgeted in the 2011 Capital Improvement Fund.

Occasionally, the Village will inform the residents of Air Pollution Action days. These days are identified by the EPA and residents are encouraged to reduce vehicle travel, lawn mower use, and keep sensitive populations indoors. The notices are posted on the Village's main webpage in the "Village News" section.

Water Conservation

In late 2009, the Village of Hoffman Estates began working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense program to bring residents information and tips on how to conserve water.  WaterSense is an EPA-sponsored partnership program that seeks to protect the future of our Nation's water supply by promoting water efficiency and enhancing the market for water-efficient products, programs, and practices.  The WaterSense program is very similar in design to the Energy Star program and label.
