Occupancy Permits

ApplicationBefore obtaining a Business License in Hoffman Estates, you must obtain a Certificate of Occupancy. This applies to: 

  • New Businesses in the Village

  • Existing businesses moving to a new location (even within the same building)

  • Businesses with new ownership

The Certificate of Occupancy and Business License Application process can be initiated concurrently, however please note that your Business License will notbe approved until the Certificate of Occupancy is issued. You cannot open or operate your business until all CO requirements (like inspections) are completed, and you have recieved your Business License from the Clerk's office. 

Applications should be made on the Village's eTRAKiT Portal. Please visit the Building Permits page for more information regarding eTRAKiT. False or missing information can lead to your permit or license being revoked. Submitting an application does not guarantee approval. 

The Village may request more documents or fees. If so, they will reach out to you via email. Progress of the permit application can be viewed on your eTRAKiT Dashboard.

  • Completed Occupancy Permit Application 

  • Business Operations Narrative outlining operations at designated site and any changes made to the space (including cosmetic)*. 

  • Floor Plan / Layout labeled by room use 

*If changes are being made that require a building permit, the applicant will be required to submit a Tenant Build Out permit instead of an Occupancy Permit. You will not need to apply for a separate Occupancy Permit Application. Please see the Building Permits page for more information.
