Did you know that heart attack symptoms can be different for women and men?

Small HeartIn the United States, someone has a heart attack almost every minute and one third of those occur in women. Risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, and excessive alcohol consumption. Heart disease begins when plaque develops. In women, plaque distributes evenly in the smallest arteries of the heart, while plaque in men tends to distribute in clumps causing blockages in their coronary arteries.

Both women and men’s most common symptom of a heart attack is chest pain or discomfort.  But women are more likely to experience other common symptoms, such as shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, cold sweats, or extreme fatigue.

If you have any one of these symptoms lasting more than five minutes, call 9-1-1 for emergency medical care. Early treatment can save your life and prevent permanent damage to your heart muscle.
