Bicycle & Pedestrian Project:
Shoe Factory Road & I-90 Undercrossing
Project Update: May 14, 2020 - Work on the east-west section of the path is anticipated to begin on Monday, May 18th. The existing earth trail will be closed during construction.
The overall project scope includes two new bicycle path components.
- Pave the existing east-west dirt path in the Forest Preserve from IL 59 to the CN railroad tracks.
- Build a new north-south path on the west side of the railroad property connecting the Shoe Factory Road path to the path on the north side of Hoffman Boulevard in the Prairie Stone Business Park.
- For construction purposes, the project has been split into the two sections noted above.
The project has been in development for a number of years, creating a design to comply with all required State and Federal procedures in order to receive grant funds through the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP). The project is a joint effort among the Village, Forest Preserves of Cook County, and the Hoffman Estates Park District. Federal funds will pay 80% of the project costs.
The east-west section of the project advanced to a State project letting in Fall 2019 and a contract has been awarded. Construction on the east-west section is expected to begin in May 2020. This work is planned to last a couple of months during which time this section of trail will not be accessible. Once a definite project schedule is determined, the information will be posted here. The Village, members of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and the project partners all are looking forward to the completion of this path.
A portion of the north-south path alignment is located on CN Railroad property which requires their approval. Despite efforts by the Village, agreement with the railroad has not been reached. As such, any further work on the north-south segment is on hold. The decision to split the overall project into two parts was based on being able to access federal funds for as much as the project as possible before the approvals expired. The railroad’s refusal to agree to the north-south path alignment means only the east-west portion of the project can move to construction at this time.
