Forestry
Wood chips make excellent mulch for trees, shrubs, and planting beds. Free wood chips are available for pickup at the Public Works Fleet Maintenance Facility (2405 Pembroke Ave., Hoffman Estates) on weekdays after 3:00 PM and anytime on weekends. Call (847) 490-6800 before pickup to confirm availability.
Hoffman Estates residents can also request free delivery of either a half load (4 cubic yards) or a full load (8 cubic yards) at no charge:
- Half load (4 cubic yards): Approx. 9' x 8' x 18" high
- Full load (8 cubic yards): Approx. 9' x 8' x 36" high
Deliveries are made as time permits and cannot be scheduled for a specific date or time. To request a delivery, contact the Public Works Department during business hours.
Mulching helps trees thrive by retaining moisture and enriching the soil. However, improper mulching can be harmful. Excessive mulch depth restricts oxygen flow to the roots, leading to decay, while piling mulch against the trunk attracts pests that can cause damage.
For best results, apply mulch no deeper than 4 inches in a saucer-like shape, keeping it away from the trunk to allow airflow. This method preserves soil moisture while preventing trunk decay and pest infestations.
Proper Saucer Mulching
Improper Volcano Mulching
The Village maintains parkway trees only. If you believe a parkway tree is dead, please contact the Public Works Department.
Trees on private property are the homeowner’s responsibility. For tree removal or trimming, please contact a private contractor.
Christmas tree drop-off begins after the holiday at three designated locations:
- Public Works Fleet Services Building – 2405 Pembroke Avenue
- Field next to Fire Station 23 – 1300 Westbury Drive
- Field adjacent to Fire Station 24 – 5775 Beacon Pointe Drive
Please remove all lights and decorations before drop-off. Signs will guide residents to the designated areas at each location.
Parkway trees are owned and maintained by the Village, with routine trimming occurring every four to seven years, primarily in late fall and winter.
For broken or hanging branches, or storm damage, please contact the Public Works Department.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB)
The Village has substantially completed the removal of ash trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), with over 6,000 trees removed by Public Works and contractors. Remaining ash trees are those treated by residents and homeowners associations.
Japanese Beetle
Japanese Beetles remain a concern in Northern Illinois, including Hoffman Estates. Affected trees develop skeletonized leaves, where only the veins remain, giving a lace-like appearance. As the damage is mostly aesthetic and not harmful to tree health, the Village does not treat Village-owned trees for Japanese Beetles.
