Police: Liquor Server Training

To better educate the servers of liquor establishments in the Village of Hoffman Estates, the Police Department is offering FREE Liquor Server Classes at the Hoffman Estates Police Department.

The purpose of this training is to teach employees that serve or sell alcohol how to properly ask for identification, learn the risks and obligations of serving alcohol and learn techniques for handling intoxicated patrons. Attendees will learn about the different types of fraudulent ID’s and learn what to look for when a fraudulent ID is suspected. Attendees will also be shown the latest techniques criminals use to make and sell fraudulent ID’s.

The state laws concerning the sale of alcohol is also addressed. Attendees will be lectured on the Dram Shop Laws and what they need to do to protect themselves and the public.

Another reason for the training is so that servers and bartenders can understand the consequences if they fail to properly ask for identification. The class will focus on the perils employees place themselves and their establishment in if a server fails to properly ask for identification.

For these reasons, The Village of Hoffman Estates requires all employees of local liquor establishments that serve or sell alcohol to have a valid training certificate from either the Hoffman Estates Police Department or a state certified BASSETT program.

The Hoffman Estates Liquor Sales Ordinance is an ordinance that requires all business’s that sell or deliver alcohol to comply. Section 8-3-14 states that “it shall be unlawful to employ any person to sell, deliver, or give alcoholic liquor who after 30 days of employment has not attended the Hoffman Estates Police Department Alcohol Training Program and received a certificate or whose certificate has expired, is under suspension or has been revoked or who after 30 days has not attended a state certified BASSETT program and received a certificate or whose certificate is under suspension or has been revoked.” A BASSETT Certificate shall be considered valid for a period of 24 month after successful completion of the program. Thereafter, employees will be required to attend the Hoffman Estates Police Department Alcohol Training Program or another state certified BASSETT program.

The Village of Hoffman Estates Ordinance also requires that each establishment shall notify the Hoffman Estates Police Department of the name of each employee within 72 hours of employment and set an appointment for the Hoffman Estates Police Department Alcohol Training Program if the employee does not posses a valid certificate.

The Hoffman Estates Police Department currently offers free monthly liquor servers classes for local establishments, one day each month at 7:00pm at the Hoffman Estates Police Department.

Employers can contact the Schaumburg Professional Bartending Academy at 847-882-7955 to attend the Bassett training program or go to the Bassett website to learn more. The training is good for two years.

If you have any questions about the Hoffman Estates Training Program, would like to set an appointment to attend the liquor server's class, or need to notify us of a new server, please contact the Hoffman Estates Police Department at 847-882-1818.
