SAFETY TIP
Do not be fooled!
Two reports have been filed with the Hoffman Estates Police Department reference telephone scams. The residents received telephone calls from a subject purporting to be a “State Trooper”. The caller states that someone was involved in an accident and the accident victim’s cellular telephone was recovered showing that a call was placed to the resident. The caller then states that they need the resident to dial *72 followed by a telephone number so that the cellular telephone records could be recovered.
Both of these calls originated from Cook County Jail. When you dial *72 it allows calls to be billed to you and all of your calls to be forwarded to another location that can accept long distance and toll calls.
Do not dial *72. Hang up the phone and report this to your local Police Department. For information on phone scams visit: AT&T Fraud Education.
