"911 emergency: units respond to the location, armed robbery in progress, man with a gun ..."
It's your first day on the job and this is your call. A dangerous felon armed with a gun. What would you do? How would you respond?
What's it really like to be a police officer? You've seen the TV show, now live the experience. The Hoffman Estates Police Department will continue accepting applications for our Annual Citizen Police Academy.
There is an orientation meeting on the first day of class from 6:30 P.M. to 9:30 P.M. Classes will then run for 12 weeks every Tuesday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., ending with a graduation ceremony at the Village Board meeting. CPA classes are held at the Police Department, 411 West Higgins Road, on the corner of Higgins Road and Spring Mill Road. Applicants must be at least 18-years old, and reside, attend school or work in Hoffman Estates. Class size is limited, and spots fill up quickly. Applicants living in areas which do not offer a Citizen Police Academy may also be considered.
The Citizen Police Academy will give participants insight into police work and the functions of the department. Students will get hands-on experience with real police equipment, such as squad cars, jail cells and duty gear, including firearms. Students will receive briefings from police patrol officers, detectives and guest speakers. Topics to be discussed will include:
• Vehicle stops
• Shoot/don't shoot situations
• Personal and home security
• SWAT operations
• Crime scene investigations (CSI)
• Laws and ordinances
• Traffic safety
• Gangs and club drugs
• K-9 demonstration
MISSION OF THE ACADEMY
The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to foster better communication between citizens and police through education. The Academy will create a nucleus of well-informed citizens who possess greater insight into police practices and services. It is hoped that graduates of the Academy will share this new knowledge with other members of the community as the opportunity arises. Everyone will benefit from enhancing their understanding of the role and function of the Police Department.
