Clearing snow is a shared responsibility

Post Date:01/16/2018 10:45 AM

When winter weather hits, the Village works cooperatively with Cook County, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and our residents to make sure streets and sidewalks are clear and safe. Many of the main roads through the Village are County or State routes, and those entities are responsible for plowing. Any complaints about the condition of these streets should be directed to the entity responsible to ensure the quickest response times.

• Higgins Road (Rt. 72)

We also rely on our residents to help keep streets and sidewalks clear of snow and ice! Did you know that shoveling snow from your driveway into a street that has been previously cleared creates a safety hazard? Snow pushed back onto a cleared roadway can refreeze and get compacted by vehicular traffic, which may result in ice buildup on the pavement. If the street has yet to be plowed, shoveling snow from your driveway into the street will result in the snow being pushed back into your or your neighbor's driveway.

Be a good neighbor - shovel your sidewalk, shovel snow away from streets, and keep fire hydrants clear in case of emergency!
