Spot Tobacco Checks
During the month of May, the Hoffman Estates Police Department will be conducting mandatory compliance checks at all businesses involved in the sale of tobacco products. Tobacco products cannot be sold to minors under the age of 18. The compliance checks consist of sending a minor into a business in an attempt to purchase cigarettes. The attempted purchases will be supervised by plainclothes police officers. The officers then speak to each sales clerk after the transaction with the minor is completed.
The Hoffman Estates Police Department recently delivered a Tobacco Retail Kit to all tobacco retailers in an effort to remind them of the laws and ordinances regarding tobacco sales. Our goal is to have 100% compliance with the tobacco laws, and thereby prevent the sale of tobacco to underage minors.
